Congressional Candidate Martin Hewitt on the Significance of Labor Day

By September 4, 2017 No Comments

MORRISTOWN, NJ –Today Martin Hewitt, Republican Candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th District, released the following statement on the significance of Labor Day, a national holiday that should never be taken for granted, or minimized in scope or practice:

Labor Day 2017

Christmas, July 4th, and Veterans Day are the holidays typically celebrated by Republicans, while Democrats seem to have an exclusive monopoly on celebrating civil rights heroes, and the workers and unions who made Labor Day a uniquely American Holiday. I reject the idea that any holiday belongs predominantly to either mainstream party. Being a moderate Republican I ask myself why?

Why would I disparage the hard work of union electricians who keep the lights on even during dark times?

Why would I speak ill of the teachers who work endless hours to teach academic and civic lessons to our children and grandchildren; generations that will take us into the future with new ideas that we cannot even begin to imagine?

Why would I berate the police that protect us, the firemen and women who keep us safe from disasters of all sorts, healthcare workers who provide care regardless of who walks through the ER?

It seems to me that all of these workers and many more should be celebrated and rewarded for their hard work and dedication, often in the face of grave danger.

If we see each other as fellow Americans and not as party partisans or tribes, we can easily see the real contributions that workers make to every man, woman, and child in the United States.

They deserve our appreciation, heartfelt thanks, and support.

So to my union friends and colleagues, thanks for everything you do.  One day perhaps we can all come together to improve the working conditions for the benefit of all Americans.

Hewitt is challenging twelve term incumbent Congressman Rodney Frelinghusyen in the June Republican Primary for Congress, because he believes the polarization of the mainstream political parties has left Americans more divided than ever. Hewitt describes himself as “socially liberal, fiscally conservative.” More information about Hewitt and the 11th Congressional District can be found at www.hewittforcongress.com
